Lil Wayne is taking his rock star personae to new heights this week by being on the cover the prestigious bible of music Rolling Stone magazine. Now it’s true that Hip Hop artist have been on the cover of Rolling Stone plenty of times but this time it is a little different. Lil Wayne is on the cover not for being the self proclaimed “King of Hip Hop” but for trying to enter a space that is foreign for a black kid coming out of the New Orleans projects. He is trying to be a force in the world of Rock music. With his new song “Prom Queen” and a new Rock album coming out he is trying to show the world that he is not just a deadly rhyme spitter but a versatile musician as well.
I am all for an artist to stretch their creative vision as far as they possibly can but so far with this stretch I have been underwhelmed. I have only heard one song though so I will not begin to judge Lil Wayne just on that one sample but it will take a lot to impress me and show me that this concept album is not a mistake. You can download music videos for “Prom Queen” and when you watch it, it looks like he had a lot of fun making it so maybe that’s what this is. An artist just having fun critics be damned. If that is case then Lil Wayne I hope you have fun.
