MtvMusic.com good idea but long way to go…
I was on gizmodo where I read about the new MTV service mtvmusic.com. This service is supposed to have all the videos that are in the MTV archives and make them available on the internet. So far they are a long way from that or they must erase their archives on an every 10 year basis.
From the ages 12 – 25, I was a heavy music video watcher. I still have my personal archive of recorded Hip Hop music videos throughout that period. I use to watch those videos over and over again when I was in High School just dreaming of the day when I would produce my favorite rappers song. So I thought I would test this new MTV service out and compare it to youtube. I mean that’s fair, youtube has millions of users to submit videos but MTV has decades of videos in their archives. It should even out, right. Wrong!

I was a fan of all music styles but since I was most heavily influenced by Hip Hop I decided to start there. I remember a gang of older obscure Hip Hop videos. For the purpose of this experiment though I decided to only choose videos that I knew were in heavy rotation on Yo MTV Raps. If they were in heavy rotation on one of their hit shows they were sure to be in archives, right. Apparently not.

As you see, about 45% of the time MtvMusic.com didn’t have the video compared to 100% of the time with YouTube.com. I know MTV service is basically new so I will continue to explore the site and hope that they expand their entries. Also I will give MTV the edge when it comes to the quality of the videos. There is no competition when it comes to that aspect. Most video’s on youtube are user supplied and so in most instances the quality suffers. That is not the case for MTV’s service. The problem is I would rather have a medium quality copy of the video than no video at all.
Right now YouTube is still king but MTV can easily dethrone them and become the new hot spot for videos just as Hulu.com has become the new Hot spot for TV shows(see story). Where before you would go to your favorite torrent site to download a show that you missed, now you only do that if it is not available on Hulu or if you have slow internet connection. So I love the idea of MTVMusic.com, it just needs to step up it’s roll out. I might have the need to relive out my 90’s high school years and for right now I still have to go to youtube to relive them properly.
